The method

Workflow,
not software.

Smart Design is how we build jewellery that’s ready to manufacture — before a single gram of metal is poured.

Arista. From sketch to bench to file — the same geometry, decided once and held across every stage.

Definition

A method,
not a style.

Smart Design isn’t a visual language. It isn’t minimalism, organic curves or hard-surface geometry — we work in all of them, depending on what the piece asks for.

Smart Design is the workflow that sits underneath every aesthetic choice. It’s how we decide what to model, how to model it, and what to leave for the bench. It’s how we know — before a render exists — whether a piece will cast cleanly, set securely and wear well over time.

Fifteen years of bench craft taught us the rules. CAD taught us how to apply them at scale. Smart Design is the bridge.

The three principles

Three rules.
Every decision.

01

The 80/20 rule.

Eighty per cent of a jewellery piece is decided by twenty per cent of the operations. Block-out, mass distribution, attachment points, stone seating. We spend time where it matters. The rest is craft applied in the right order.

02

Workflow, not software.

ZBrush, Blender, Inkscape, Photoshop, AI tools. They’re means, not methods. We move between them depending on what the piece needs — not what we already know how to use. The discipline is in the workflow. The software is the language we happen to speak.

03

If it can’t be produced, it isn’t design.

A file that looks beautiful on screen but fails in printing, breaks in casting, won’t hold a stone or wears unevenly on the hand isn’t jewellery design. It’s decoration. Every model we deliver has been thought through to the print bed, the flask and the bench. That’s the only standard.

The problem it solves

Most CAD files
break at the bench.

We’ve seen it across fifteen years of working with brands, designers and other studios: files that render beautifully and then collapse the moment they meet a printer, a flask, a torch or a setter’s burr.

Geometry too dense to decimate cleanly. STL files with non-manifold edges, broken normals, hidden internal walls. Supports that scar the surface where they shouldn’t. Walls too thin to cast. Prongs angled wrong for the stone. Hinges that won’t survive a polish. Hollow-outs that print but won’t pour.

The cause is almost always the same: the file was designed without the workflow that follows it. Smart Design closes that gap. Every piece is built knowing exactly who handles it next — the printer, the foundry, the setter, the polisher — and what each one needs to receive.

Application

The method,
across every service.

Smart Design isn’t reserved for a specific type of project. It’s the operating system behind everything we do.

  • In CAD design, it means files delivered with print, casting, setting and finishing already solved.
  • In 3D print preparation, it means clean decimation, validated STL geometry, and support strategies that don’t compromise the surface that matters.
  • In production, it means prototypes that arrive correct the first time, and series that scale without surprises.
  • In institutional commissions, it means trophies, awards and corporate pieces engineered for the budget, the quantity and the deadline.
  • In our training programme, it means we teach the workflow first. The software is what we use to demonstrate it.

Audience

Built for people who
care how it gets made.

Smart Design works when there’s a real piece at the end of the file. Some of the people we work best with —

  • Jewellery brands developing collections that need to be repeatable, profitable and bench-friendly across every size and variant.
  • Independent designers who need a CAD partner that understands what happens after the file is delivered — and designs accordingly from the first block-out.
  • Workshops and studios outsourcing technical modelling, print preparation or prototyping, who want files that arrive correct rather than files that arrive fast.
  • Institutions, municipalities and award programmes commissioning trophies, pins or corporate pieces that need to scale cleanly within a fixed budget and deadline.

Training

The method
is teachable.

Smart Design for Jewellery is the training line of Studiojoia Pro. The current edition pivots on ZBrush as the central software, with future editions on AI-applied design and advanced production workflows.

Designed for jewellers, designers and CAD operators who want the workflow, not just the buttons.
